Our history

The largest basic education company in Brazil, SOMOS Educação has a large portfolio that includes publishing, learning systems, schools, pre-university courses, language courses, and educational technology. In 2016, SOMOS registered a net income of R$1.8 billion.

Our history starts in 2010, when Ática and Scipione publishing and SER learning system, members of Grupo Abril, were split to create Abril Educação, the company’s first name.

At that time, the split made possible to take advantage of the tradition and pioneering on the production of textbooks and paradidactic books, and to explore the potential of the educational segment. Together, the publishing sector counts with a portfolio consisted of approximately two thousand works, which includes pedagogical successes, classics from the literature for children and teens, atlases and dictionaries.

From 2010 until today, the company has invested in organic growth and concluded 13 acquisition of recognized brands and services of excellence, and established strategic partnerships.

To take the opportunity to grow, integrate and diversify its business, the company decided to raise funds in the stock market from an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The strong expansion of the company attracted founds of private equity. In 2010, BR Investimentos incorporated 24.7% of the capital of Abril Educação, as part of a strategy of concentration of investments in the sector that moves around R$ 36 billion per year in Brazil and that is in continued expansion. In October 2014, Abril Educação concluded the transition to the Novo Mercado of BM&FBOVESPA (Stock Market, Commodities and Futures – Anonymous Society), segment in which companies with the most advanced corporate governance practices are allocated.

In February 2015, Tarpon Investimentos took control of the company, purchasing 40.6% of the company, Aprilpar Participações, that belonged to Civita family.

In June 2015, the company leaves the green color and the symbol of a tree and assumes a new identity that symbolizes the company’s current phase:SOMOS Educação. The new brand translates in a clear way the essence that was born in the Brazil’s largest basic education and pre-university company.
